Philip Schoenfeld, MD, is an accomplished gastroenterologist with a career spanning over three decades. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by an MD from the same institution's School of Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Philip Schoenfeld also holds master's degrees in health professions education and clinical epidemiology.
Dr. Schoenfeld spent his medical training years at the Naval Medical Center, where he completed an internal medicine residency followed by a gastroenterology fellowship. His academic career includes appointments at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where he was a professor of medicine. Currently, he is a research scientist with the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center.
Recently, Dr. Schoenfeld founded EBMed, a nonprofit organization focusing on gastrointestinal education. EBMed is dedicated to continuing medical education and mentoring women and underrepresented minorities to advance in academic careers in gastroenterology.
Dr. Schoenfeld has received numerous awards such as the Joseph A. Maher Award for Excellence in Clinical Research and the Wyeth Outstanding Gender Based Research Award. He has been actively involved in professional societies including the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association, holding various leadership roles. His published research articles tackle various topics ranging from irritable bowel syndrome management to colonoscopy screenings.
